Using Decorative Chalks On A Budget
Decorative chalks can be used in many different ways in scrapbooking and in card making. I have recently descovered the wonderful world of decorative chalks and would like to share a few tips and Ideas including money saving ideas. Firstly there are many different chalks available on the market today and many of them are acid free which is a must if you intend to use them on scrapbooks etc. There are pastels, brights, shimmering chalks and muted natural colours. They can be expensive but I have found that you can cheat a bit if you use eye shadows instead ( remembering that these are not acid free so it is a choice you will need to make for yourself,I would not recommend this for scrapbooking ) Eye shadows though can be bought often very cheaply these days and they smudge and they blend just like the chalks used in card making they also come in a fantastic range of colours and even include some glittery and shimmery ones. I have a great copper one that looks fantastic. Another obvious choice is childrens blackboard chalk but the range of colour in these is limited. Once you have your chalks it is a good idea to play around with them on some scraps of paper and see what kind of effects you can get with the chalks and also how you can build colour from very subtle highlights to very deep colour. Shop bought chalks come with special applicators like little round cotton balls that are tightly packed and can be picked up with tweezers etc and applied to the chalk then on to the surface you wish to cover. You can however use cotton buds or cotton wool balls for a cheaper alternative but do practice first to see how they will cover and how much pressure is needed. Do remember also to seal your chalks if you want them to last well and stay vibrant. A sealing spray can be bought from craft shops but i personally prefer the cheaper alternative ( as always ) which is to use a hairspray. This does the job efficiently without the cost. Backgrounds can be made easily as well as using the chalks in a variety of ways and with many other crafting techniques. Here are a few ways of using them : 1/ Spread a swirly background of colours of your choice all over your card or paper and use for backgrounds. Also if you take a clear stamping ink and dip in a rubber or acrylic stamp image and press over the background then re-apply chalk you will get a great overlay chalk image effect. 2/ use to make a wonderful soft smudged effect on your stamped images like flowers etc (this looks stunning and is really pretty) 3/ Use the chalks with a cotton bud and apply to the outer edges of your card to give a lovely diestressed coloured edging. Also looks good on tags too. 4/ Use the chalks on raised embossed images for a subtle and delicate look 5/ You can add a little of the chalk powder to a plastic lid etc and then dip a wet paintbrush into it to give a great painted vibrant look and it dries really well too.
